Stove top espresso machines, called 'moka' coffee pot are most commonly found in Italy, Spain and Portugal. These machines produce dark coffee similar to that of a conventional espresso machine. The bottom chamber of the stove top espresso machines contain the water. The middle chamber serves as a filter basket and sits inside of the bottom chamber holding the ground coffee. The top chamber, screws onto the bottom chamber. The pot is heated on the stove and the pressure from the steam in the bottom forces the water through a tube into the filter-basket then through the ground coffee, the metal filter, and then it funnels into the top chamber where the coffee is then ready to serve. The stove top espresso machines should be taken completely apart after each use, cleaned and dried before using again. Stove top espresso makers are very portable and they require no electricity to use. This makes them great for travelers and campers. Stove top espresso makers produce dark coffee, but they usually lack the necessary pressure which create crema. |
